Research questions:
How can we quantitatively measure building's performance from the occupant health perspectives?
Can we quantify health benefits by buildings in a monetary manner and consider them as part of life cycle costs?
Description:
This research develops a excel-based tool that quantifies and monetizes the health benefits by improving
the building performance with respect to temperature, humidity, indoor air quality (e.g., Particular Matter 2.5).

Research questions:
How can we feasibly (i.e., non invasively) measure occupant's physiological responses to develop personal thermal comfort models?
Description:
Through innovative sensing approaches using RGB video images, Doppler radar sensors, and heat flux sensors,
this research introduces feasibly solutions to capture individual physiological mechanisms as support to perosnal thermal comfort models.

Research questions:
How can we examine occupancy sensors systemactially in a residential building
and what'd be the energy impact of having an occupancy-centric HVAC operation?
Description:
While collaborating with sensor developers, occupancy-centric HVAC controls were implemented
at the PNNL Lab Homes (figure) in Richland, WA, and examined the sensor and HVAC performances!

Research questions:
Can smart home devices like smart thermostats could contribute to BEM?
What are the impactful parameters to determine occupancy schedules in residential buildings?
Description:
Benefiting from a large-scale ecobee dataset, collected from the Donate Your Data program,
data-driven residential occupancy schedules were identified and a tool that generates stochastic residential
occupancy schedules is developed. More details will be released soon!

Description:
This project aims to update ASHRAE Standard 140 by evaluating different BEM tools.
PNNL was responsible for EnergyPlus and python scripts and functions were developed to modify idf files (through epJSON files.)

Description:
EnergyPlus is rather a standard BEM engine, which has been sponsored & developed by the Department of Energy for ages.
Dr. Jung was involved in the E+ development project (9.6 version and 2022 version) and developed several features,
including 'Standard62.1SimplifiedProcedure', 'SetpointManager:SystemNodeReset:Temperature', and so on.

Description:
ASHRAE90.1 introduces building-level schedules and loads and such representations do not reflect unpredictable natures in BEM.
Hence, this research aims to develop building-space-specific loads and schedules,
which will demonstrate diversity in loads and schedules (occupancy, lighting, plug loads) in each space & building type.

How can we better optimized individually preferred environments in a shared (i.e., multi-occupancy) space?
Description:
This research identifies the impact of addressing thermal comfort sensitivity in optimizing preferred temperatures by multiple occupants,
and analyzed the energy impacts of having diverse multi-occupancy spaces (e.g., different individuals, numbers, etc.).
